The accompanying mounting and gear locations are applicable for all general installations of power take-off on the transmission gear box of motor trucks and tractors where the size of the transmission permits. The heavy-duty type opening can be adapted to the regular-duty type by the use of an adapter with 6.35 mm (0.25 in) flange thickness with appropriate bolt pattern and thread engagement. This SAE Standard applies only to new winches which are primarily designed for intermittent pulls and lifts and whose configuration and condition are the same as when they were shipped by the manufacturer. They are not intended to be used in any manner for the movement of personnel. They may be driven by any power source recommended by the manufacturer and will be capable of being powered in either direction. They will be equipped with an automatic safety brake system to control a load when lowering under power and positively hold a load when power is not being delivered to the winch. A hydraulic flow control valve or similar device may be used in the brake system to control a load when lowering under power. A clutch to release the drum for “free-spooling” may be provided and will be designed not to disengage itself under load. A drag brake may be provided to control “free-spooling,” but will not be relied on to control or hold a load.

This SAE Recommended Practice is intended for qualification testing for brake drums used on highway commercial vehicles with air brakes using an inertia-dynamometer procedure. This Recommended Practice consists of two distinct tests: Part A - durability and speed maintenance test, and Part B - heat check drag sequence test. Each test can be considered to be an independent evaluation of the brake drum which tests different properties.

This SAE Recommended Practice establishes uniform engineering nomenclature for wheels, hubs, rims, and their components used in truck, bus, and trailer applications. This nomenclature and accompanying drawings are intended to define functional truck wheel, hub, and rim designs. For nomenclature specific to “passenger-type” disc wheels, refer to SAE J1982. The International Standard (ISO) nomenclature is shown in parentheses when different than SAE J393.

This SAE Standard covers complete general and dimensional specifications for tube fittings of the spherical and flanged sleeve compression types for use in the piping of air brake systems on automotive vehicles. The spherical sleeve compression type Figures 1A to 5 and Tables 1 to 3 is intended for use with annealed copper alloy tubing per SAE J1149, Type 1. The flanged sleeve compression type Figures 6A to 11 and Tables 4 to 6 is intended for use with nylon tubing per SAE J844. It is not intended to restrict or preclude other designs of a tube fitting for use with SAE J844, air brake tubing. Performance requirements for SAE J844 are covered in SAE J1131. See SAE J1131 for the Performance Requirements of Reusable (Push to Connect) Fittings Intended for Use in Automotive Air Brake Systems.

The purpose of this Recommended Practice is to verify that vehicles and/or components are capable of communicating a required set of information, in accordance with the diagnostic messages specified in SAE J1939-73, to fulfill the off-board diagnostic tool interface requirements contained in the government regulations cited below. This document describes the tests, methods, and results for verifying diagnostic communications from an off board diagnostic tool (i.e., scan tool) to a vehicle and/or component. SAE members have generated this document to serve as a guide for testing vehicles for compliance with ARB and other requirements for emissions-related on-board diagnostic (OBD) functions for heavy duty engines used in medium and heavy duty vehicles. The development of HD OBD regulations by US EPA and California’s Air Resources Board (ARB) require that diagnostic message services are exercised to evaluate diagnostic communication standardization requirements on production vehicles.

General criteria are presented as guidelines for: control device location, resistance, and actuation of hand and foot controls by the machine's operator. The criteria are based upon physical limitations as defined by human factors engineering principles. This SAE Recommended Practice applies to upright seated operators of Road Building and Maintenance, and Specialized Mining Machinery categories of off-road, self-propelled work machines as identified in SAE J1116. The criteria presented should apply to most situations. Each situation, however, must be evaluated as to its own function and its relationship to other functions to achieve the desired operation action in normal and emergency situations with high probability. The values for control displacement and resistance apply only to what is required to achieve the desired performance of the function being controlled for the 5th through the 95th percentile person as defined in ISO 3411.

This SAE Information Report establishes a consistent procedure for measuring and analyzing the natural sway response of a particular trailer when attached to a particular vehicle under specific loading and operating conditions. This test procedure applies, but is not limited to, passenger cars, vans, light/medium-duty trucks as tow vehicles, and semitrailers with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 11794 kg (26000 pounds) or less. Other applications include full trailers, tow dollies, tow bars, and the like. Other articulated vehicles can utilize this test procedure as long as the test does not exceed the linear behavior of the system. This test procedure does not apply to motorcycles towing trailers.
