Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) is the loss or impending loss of manufacturers or suppliers of critical items and raw materials due to production discontinuance. DMSMS is an increasingly difficult problem for DoD weapon systems because the manufacturing lives of many critical items get shorter while the life cycles of military weapon systems keep increasing. Traditionally, efforts to mitigate the effects of DMSMS have been reactive; that is, the effects are addressed only when they are seen. This reactive approach to DMSMS solutions leads to decisions that put a premium on faster solution paths with attractive short-term gains in order to avoid system inoperability, while ignoring the long-term solution paths that would lead to generic families of solutions or larger-scale solutions with the capability of avoiding future DMSMS issues. In order to solve DMSMS issues with lower overall cost, DMSMS solutions must change from reactive to proactive.

This SAE Recommended Practice establishes a method of testing the structural integrity of the brake system of all new trucks, buses, and combination vehicles designed for roadway use and falling in the following classifications: Truck and Bus—Over 4500 kg (10 000 lb) GVWR Combination vehicle—Towing vehicle over 4500 kg (10 000 lb) GVWR The test consists of two distinct tests: a Structural Endurance Test followed by a Structural Ultimate Strength Test. NOTE—These two tests originated from separate procedures, and were combined in this Recommended Practice. Each test can be considered to be an independent evaluation of the service brake’s structure. Based on time available, cost limitations, and the desired evaluation and historical data available, either of these tests could be considered as a complete evaluation of the brake’s structure.

The SAE J1939 communications network is applicable for light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty vehicles used on-road or off-road, and for appropriate stationary applications which use vehicle derived components (e.g., generator sets). Vehicles of interest include, but are not limited to, on-highway and off-highway trucks and their trailers, construction equipment, and agricultural equipment and implements. SAE J1939-71 Vehicle Application Layer is the SAE J1939 reference document for the conventions and notations that specify parameter placement in PGN data fields, the conventions for ASCII parameters, and conventions for PGN transmission rates. This document previously contained the majority of the SAE J1939 data parameters and messages for information exchange between the ECU applications connected to the SAE J1939 communications network.

This SAE Recommended Practice describes the dynamic and static testing procedures required to evaluate the integrity of the ambulance substructure, to support the safe mounting of a SAE J3027 compliant litter retention device or system, when exposed to a frontal, side or rear impact (i.e. a crash impact). Its purpose is to provide manufacturers, ambulance builders, and end-users with testing procedures and, where appropriate, acceptance criteria that, to a great extent, ensure the ambulance substructure meets the same performance criteria across the industry. Prospective manufacturers or vendors have the option of performing either dynamic testing or static testing. Descriptions of the test set-up, test instrumentation, photographic/video coverage, test fixture, and performance metrics are included.

This Aerospace Recommenced Practice (ARP) defines a series of ball bearings which are specifically designed to support the rotor in a dynamic balancing machine. By establishing certain bearing sizes the number of required balancing machine support adapters will be reduced. The intent is that each size bearing identified by its outside diameter and width will be capable of accommodating any bore diameter within the specified range of that size. This ARP specifies both the nominal dimensions and the tolerances for a series of ball bearings with semifinished inside diameters which are suitable for supporting gas turbine rotating components in dynamic balancing machines.
