The ability to successfully predict industrial product performance during service life provides benefits for producers and users. This book addresses methods to improve product quality, reliability, and durability during the product life cycle, along with methods to avoid costs that can negatively impact profitability plans. The methods presented can be applied to reducing risk in the research and design processes and integration with manufacturing methods to successfully predict product performance. This approach incorporates components that are based on simulations in the laboratory. The results are combined with in-field testing to determine degradation parameters. These approaches result in improvements to product quality, performance, safety, profitability, and customer satisfaction.

The result of a combined effort between the Society for Machinery Failure Prevention Technology (MFPT) and the International Society of Automation (ISA), which held their conferences together in May, 2013, the proceedings are now are available in print format. Focusing on the theme of Sensors and Systems for Reliability, Safety and Affordability, the Joint Conference MFPT 2013 and ISA’s 59th International Instrumentation Symposium reflected the importance of sensing and condition management systems in lowering sustainment costs. The proceedings contain 33 technical papers chosen out of the 120 presented during the various sessions.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the analysis and design of health management systems for cooperating unmanned aerial vehicles. Such systems rely upon monitoring and fault adaptation schemes. Motivation for their study comes from the fact that, despite the use of fault-tolerant control software and hardware embedded onboard air vehicles, overall fleet performance may still be degraded after the occurrence of anomalous events such as systems faults and failures. Cooperative health management (CHM) systems seek to provide adaptation to the presence of faults by capitalizing on the availability of interconnected computing, sensing and actuation resources. This monograph complements the proposed CHM concepts by means of case studies and application examples. It presents fundamental principles and results encompassing optimization, systems theory, information theory, dynamics, modeling and simulation.

From concept to application, Fatigue and Durability of Metals at High Temperatures describes the method of strain-range partitioning for analyzing time-dependent fatigue. Creep (time-dependent) deformation is first introduced for monotonic and cyclic loading. Multiple chapters then discuss strain-range partitioning in details for multi-axial loading conditions and how different loading permutations can lead to different micro-mechanistic effects. The total-strain method of strain-range partitioning (SRP) is described, which is a methodology that sees use in several industries.

The application of accelerated testing theory is a difficult proposition, yet one that can result in considerable time and cost savings, as well as increasing a product's useful life. In Accelerated Testing: A Practitioner's Guide to Accelerated and Reliability Testing, readers are exposed to the latest, most practical knowledge available in this dynamic and important discipline. Authors Bryan Dodson and Harry Schwab draw on their considerable experience in the field to present comprehensive, insightful views in this book. Development and quality assurance tests are defined in detail and are presented from a practical viewpoint. Included are testing fundamentals, plans and models, and equipment and methods most commonly used in accelerated testing. Individuals seeking to evaluate and improve the design lives of components and systems will find this book a valuable reference, with special attention being paid to testing in the mobility industries.

This book explains how mechanical material behavior relates to the design of structural machine components. The major emphasis is on fatigue and failure behavior using engineering models that have been developed to predict, in advance of service, acceptable fatigue and other durability-related lifetimes. Information covers broad classes of materials used for high-performance structural applications such as aerospace components, automobiles, and power generation systems. Coverage focuses on metallic materials but also addresses unique capabilities of important nonmetals.
