This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) defines uniform Quality and Technical requirements relative to metallic parts marking performed in using "Data Matrix symbology" used within the aerospace industry. The ISO/IEC 16022 specifies general requirements (data character encodation, error correction rules, decoding algorithm, etc.). In addition to ISO/IEC 16022 specification, part identification with such symbology is subject to the following requirements to ensure electronic reading of the symbol. The marking processes covered by this standard are as follows: - Dot Peening - Laser - Electro-Chemical Etching Further marking processes will be included if required. This standard does not specify information to be encoded. Unless specified otherwise in the contractual business relationship, the company responsible for the design of the part shall determine the location of the Data Matrix Marking. Symbol position should allow optimum illumination from all sides for readability.

This specification covers the procedure for ultrasonic inspection of flat, contoured, and cylindrical products having a cross sectional-thickness of 0.02 to 0.5 inches (0.5 to 12.7 mm). This specification does not apply to inspection of composite materials.

This process has been used typically for locating and defining internal defects such as cracks, voids, laminations, and other structural discontinuities which may or may not be exposed to the surface, but usage is not limited to such applications.

This document provides a basic uniform method for ensuring that aerospace standard parts (products) conform with the requirements of technical specifications referring to qualified parts and for a manufacturer of such parts to have a qualified management system at least equivalent to AS/EN/SJAC9100. These standards apply when called out in the aerospace standard part standard. 9100 - Quality Systems - Model for Quality Assurance in Design, Development, Production, Installation and Servicing NOTE: This standard is published as an equivalent document in several countries. This standard uses the 9100 designation when referring to this standard. 9103 - Variation Management of Key Characteristics NOTE: This standard is published as an equivalent document in several countries. This standard uses the 9103 designation when referring to this standard.
