The art and science of glass engineering, specifically applied to automotive projects, are not at all commonplace. Although windshields, side and backlites seem to be obvious parts of any car, truck, or bus, designing, sourcing, and manufacturing them are unique challenges. From the business perspective, cost control makes the choice of the ideal supplier a vital decision, greatly impacting availability and production. From the technical standpoint, the most creative designs can be rendered impractical due to regulations, lack of economies of scale, or convoluted logistics. Glass Engineering: Design Solutions for Automotive Applications tackles all these variables using a no-nonsense, step-by-step approach. Written by Lyn R. Zbinden, a mechanical engineer and glass specialist, this book narrows the gap between the reader and a technical subject by using language that is easy to understand, a good variety of examples, and a series of invaluable reference design tables. With a career spanning over 30 years in the automotive industry, Lyn R.

Weight reduction is again a priority across the industry, as strict new regulations push for greater vehicle efficiency/CO2 reduction in the US and Europe. From the smallest fasteners to entire vehicle architectures, engineers are wringing excess weight out of new components and systems, while looking for new ways to lighten existing designs. Although the motivations for and benefits of automotive weight reduction are plentiful, a number of barriers exist to the development of lighter, more streamlined and mass-efficient vehicles. This third edition report looks at policy initiatives, weight saving methods, competition between OEMs, barriers, drivers and government regulation. Fuel economy & CO2 emissions are detailed for the US, EU, Japan, South Korea & China. Vehicle safety & cost implications are also considered along with weight reduction by sector (body structure, chassis, powertrain and interior). The report also includes a detailed section on materials technology and examines the use of advanced steel, aluminum, magnesium, titanium, carbon fiber, plastics, bio-materials and textiles.

Modern aircraft manufacturing involves drilling and countersinking hundreds of thousands to millions of holes. Doing this work by hand accounts for 65% of the cost of airframe assembly, 85% of the quality issues, and 80% of the lost time due to injuries. Automated drilling and countersinking replaces traditional hand methods and involves using numeric control machinery to drill and countersink a finished hole “one shot” (drilling a finished hole without using pilot holes or tool changes). This is a proven cost reducing technology that improves quality where it has been applied successfully. The focus of this book is on automating the process of drilling and countersinking holes during airframe manufacturing. Since this is the area of greatest return on investment for airframe producers, the book provides a stepped approach for evaluating possible areas for applying automation and a detailed description of the process for choosing, acquiring, and transitioning the right machinery for success.

Relational analysis, defined as quantitative analysis of the relationships of high- and low-temperature properties in relation to their room-temperature values, provides a useful technique for estimating the properties of similar metals and alloys for which limited or no data are available. This book demonstrates how to use relational analysis methodology to extrapolate and estimate properties of metallic alloys at high temperatures from lower temperature data, and for estimating the properties of alloys for which scant property data exists. Data tables and graphs are presented for a wide range of aluminum alloys. Also shown, is how to apply relational analysis to other alloy systems including steels, magnesium alloys, and titanium alloys.

James E. Harbour
Factory Man is about James Harbour and the epic struggle of the U.S. auto industry to catch up to Japan in quality and productivity. Harbour is a former manufacturing executive who, partly by chance, became the first U.S. expert to study Toyota's operations in Japan. Harbour's consulting firm, Harbour & Associates has gained worldwide recognition for its annual public studies of factory productivity. The Harbour Report is the essential annual scorecard of who is winning the productivity race in the U.S. In 1981, Harbour reported that Toyota could offer a small car for sale in the U.S. at a production cost of $1,500-$1,700 less than the Detroit automakers at that time, a cost advantage of about 30 percent. The impact on Detroit was atomic, and launched the painful, historic effort by the Big Three to catch up, which continues today. James Harbour's story, blunt and accessible, includes a detailed description of how Detroit went astray, beginning right after World War II. He saw it all firsthand.
