This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) establishes the basic requirements for the specification and testing of air/surface (intermodal) 8 ft x 8 ft (2.44 m x 2.44 m) cross-section containers. The basic rquirements for the air/surface (intermodal) container are presented in Sections 3 to 6 while the detailed design requirements are in Appendix A. Appendix B describes the sections of other standards that apply to air/surface containers. Appendix C describes uniformity of test apparatus and methods. These appendices shall be referred to for important supplemental requirements and procedures for this document. AS4041 presents the requirements for air mode general purpose containers. Requirements for containers to be transported by rotary-wing aircraft are excluded from this document. NOTE: The essential basic and detail criteria are identified by use of the key word "shall."

This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) covers high strength thin wall (commercial) sockets, universal sockets, box wrenches and torque adaptors which possess the strength, clearances, and internal wrenching design so configured that, when mated with 12-point fasteners conforming to the requirement of AS870, they shall transmit torque to the fastener without bearing on the outer 5% of the fastener's wrenching points. Inclusion of dimensional data in this document is not intended to imply that all of the products described herein are stock production sizes. Consumers are requested to consult with manufacturers concerning lists of stock production sizes. The dimensional limits of box and combination wrench lengths have been established to provide configuration control for tool storage applications.

The scope of this SAE Recommended Practice is to establish uniform test procedures for passenger cars, to determine whether the system is defined as a defroster or defogger, and to establish minimum performance requirements for each system. A defroster for purposes of this practice is a system which will remove moisture and/or frost from the interior surface of the backlight at -18 °C. A defogger is a system which will remove moisture and/or fog from the interior surface of the backlight at 4 °C. The test procedure is intended to simulate actual conditions by utilizing either a cold room with an appropriate device to introduce air flow over the backlight or a sufficiently large wind tunnel with ambient temperature control. The test procedure and the minimum performance requirements are based on currently available engineering data.

This report was prepared to provide a summary of the first ten years, 1958 to 1968, of work performed on life-support systems for manned spacecraft. Members of the preparing committee and other life-support specialists reviewed all of the literature published on this subject before 1969, and agreed that the references cited herein present the best data available on each of the techniques or processes devised for life support. Tables are presented to indicate the type of data contained in each reference - i.e., descriptive, analytical, experimental and/or development data. In addition, discussions are presented on the past, present and future state-of-the-art of each subsystem. Thus, this report should be useful in training new personnel and avoiding the duplication of work performed in the past.
