This recommended practice will specify a standard duty cycle and set of conditions for component-level durability testing. The "duty cycle" refers to a set of loading conditions (e.g. torque or pressure and cycling count), and the 'test conditions" refers to environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and part conditioning from prior exposure (e.g. heat aging).

The purpose of this document is to establish air conditioning design guidelines that will apply to most systems rather than the specific design of any particular system. Operating conditions and characteristics of the equipment will determine the design of any successful system, and since these characteristics and conditions vary greatly from one application to another, the designer must determine the goals expected to be reached under the conditions encountered. To determine the capacity of such items as blowers, condenser fans, condenser coils, evaporator coils, filters, compressors, etc., will require the adherence to several guidelines, some of which are outlined in this document.

This SAE Recommended Practice establishes a uniform procedure for testing the brake systems (service and parking) of all passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and multipurpose passenger vehicles up to and including 4500 kg (10 000 lb) GVWR. The purpose of the test code is to evaluate brake system performance of vehicles in service for compliance with regulations. The test code is expected to be utilized as a basis for a brake evaluation conducted by State or Federal officials engaged in highway safety programs. The primary consideration is that this test requires a minimum of instrumentation, time, driver skill, and cost to conduct.

There is currently no requirement in place for aftermarket brake lining performance. NHTSA has indicated that the automotive aftermarket should take a proactive approach to come up with a standard test definition for lining evaluation. Many aftermarket manufacturers use dynamometer testing to evaluate lining performance, but there is currently not a common recognized method for on-vehicle lining screening. This procedure was created to provide a quick, on-vehicle test method for lining performance evaluation. This procedure is intended for use in passenger cars; multi purpose vehicles and light trucks with a gross vehicle weight less than 4535 kg(10 000 lb).

It is applicable to new caliper assemblies which are employed in passenger car and truck brake systems utilizing hydraulic brake fluids. Brake design and vehicle performance requirements are not included. Specification limits are left to the discretion of the responsible manufacturer. This procedure was developed for base brake operation and does not consider some unusual effects of ABS (Anti-Lock-Brake System) or Traction Control systems which may have a significant effect on the caliper. Careful analysis of the particular type ABS and/or Traction Control should be made and additional tests may be required which are not included in this document.
