The commercial vehicle segment represents a diverse set of applications, both on-highway and off-highway, which drives complexity into the application of future technologies to improve overall efficiency. This symposium looks to provide insights into the diversity of the applications and potential solutions for the commercial vehicle segment, including: • Differences in on and off-highway application requirements • Impact of efficiency over a wide-range of applications • How efficiency can be maintained over the life of an application • How energy can be recovered and stored on the applications • How the vehicle cab/operator station changes with efficiency improvements • How “traditional” requirements continue to be met with future technologies • How the driver/operator will be impacted by future efficiency improvements • How the fleet/business owner will be impacted by future efficiency improvements

Big Data is coming to the commercial vehicle industry from multiple angles and is heading in multiple directions. This panel will introduce fundamental Big Data concepts, examine the current state of Big Data in our industry, and forecast the most likely next steps our industry will take in the Big Data domain. Panelists will address questions like – What is Big Data and where is the data coming from? What tools, workflows, and standards are in place today and which ones are needed for progress? What agendas are other mobility market sectors following and how do those intersect with CV agendas? What challenges and applications are likely to be tackled next? What is the connection between Big Data, ADAS, and autonomous vehicles?

Advancements in available data, processing techniques and computational hardware is advancing how CAE is used during development and beyond. Early in the development cycle, early optimization is enabled by multi-system models provide accurate boundary conditions enabling early investigation of many parameters under different boundary conditions. As hardware is available, real-time CAE can provide realistic boundary conditions for hardware-in-the-loop testing from ECU’s to transmissions enabling early testing under realistic conditions. As customer feedback and warranty data becomes available, CAE is a key enabler for diagnosing failure modes and potential solutions based on real-world data. This panel aims to explore how new approaches for CAE is affecting the product development process, changing data management requirements, adjusting requirements for CAE developments and the on-going goal of minimizing differences between the virtual and real worlds.
