This presentation will cover the status, outlook, and challenges for vehicle weight reduction. This will cover topics from weight trends in developed markets, as well as regulatory effects. These topics will then be evaluated for an understanding of what transmissions will be subjected to for sizing and capability, as well the focus on transmissions themselves for weight reduction.

General Motors Global Propulsion Systems’ first nine-speed automatic transmission makes its debut in the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, advancing a legacy of multispeed transmissions designed to optimize efficiency, performance and refinement. The Hydra-Matic 9T50 nine-speed is paired with an Ecotec 2.0L Turbo engine in the Malibu, contributing to an EPA estimated 33 mpg highway, a three-percent increase over the 2016 model eight-speed automatic. The 9T50 has a wider 7.6:1 overall ratio, which is the ratio between the first gear ratio and the top gear ratio, - compared to the six-speed’s 6.0:1 ratio. The 9T50 is fitted with a “deep” 4.69 first gear ratio for excellent off-the-line acceleration and a “tall” 0.62 top gear ratio for low-rpm highway cruising. That balance optimizes acceleration and fuel economy while reducing engine noise during cruising. With nine available forward ratios, the step size between the gears is reduced providing smooth, precise upshifts and excellent refinement.

Jaguar Land Rover has developed a revolutionary hybrid transmission that will both improve the efficiency of future vehicles and expand our all-wheel drive capability. The £30 million advanced research project, TRANSCEND, uses an innovative ultra-wide ratio spread architecture that integrates the functionality of a conventional transfer case (low-range gear box), dual-clutch transmission and hybrid technologies in to one single transmission unit, to deliver new levels of on and off-road performance with fuel economy improvements of nearly 10%. TRANSCEND is an advanced research project that combines innovative mechanical design and advanced manufacturing techniques to deliver a compact, lightweight eight-speed transmission with an ultra-wide ratio spread of 20, more than double that of a conventional eight-speed automatics.

As North America looks to newer future standards, and manufacturers in Europe and Asia migrate to a more globalized WLTP cycle, bearing manufacturers must be flexible to design unique solutions to effectively compete in the global marketplace. This technical presentation will cover fundamental bearing application and design knowledge to create unique, optimized, and efficient solutions to meet these varying and sometimes conflicting design targets.

In the past, vehicle hybridization often resulted in electrified powertrains with increased mass and size. This was accepted by the vehicle system because overall reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption could still be achieved. With the increasing battery size in BEV/PHEV and the increasing demand for low cost electrification solution with minimum modification to base vehicle today, transmission engineers are challenged to deliver more package efficient hybrid transmission system. This presentation will discuss the possible solutions including hybrid system architecture, 48V system, and electric motor component technology for the weight reduction and its challenges.

A new generation of a planetary-gear-based automatic transmission system is designed with an increasing number of ratio steps. It requires synchronous actuation of multiple wet clutches, often more than 2 elements, in order to execute a complex shift sequence on demand. Accurate knowledge of clutch behaviors in actual vehicle environment is indispensable for achieving precise clutch controls and reducing shift calibration effort. Wet clutches are routinely evaluated on industry-standard SAE#2 tester during clutch design process. However, they do not correlate well with vehicle shift behaviors due to the limited reproducibility of realistic slip, actuator force profiles and lubrication conditions. Thus, it remains a challenge to substantiate bench test data in the absence of actual clutch behaviors observed in a vehicle. This article describes in-vehicle characterization of wet clutch engagement torque, with a focus on temperature effects during gear-ratio changing.

Honda developed 9-speed Dual Clutch Transmission for 2nd-generation NSX. This transmission had required compact layout , acceleration performance and high shift response. The parallel multi-shaft structure of twin mainshaft contribute to compact layout. High torque capacity clutch and high strength material parts were adopted for transmitting high torque of 550Nm. And , two kinds of oil were applied in clutch room and gear room with optimized lubrication and cooling system. In addition , optimum gear ratio and high shift response enabled driving of super sports car , quiet cruising at high speeds was realized by 9-speed.

Honda designed and developed an all-new FWD (front-wheel drive) 10-speed transmission. This new transmission is based on Honda original structure optimized for recently demands of improvement fuel economy and drivability, compactification to correspond to small FWD engine room layout. This transmission has four planetary gear sets, seven clutch & brake elements including a new forward and reverse switching technology. This new technology enables low friction and compactness. Also with optimized structure and direct control hydraulic control system, quick and smooth shift response is available.
