Legislative requirements to reduce CO2 emissions by 2020 have resulted in significant efforts by car manufacturers to explore various methods of pollution abatement. One of the most effective ways found so far is by shortening the cylinder stroke and downsizing the engine. This new engine then needs to be boosted, or turbocharged, to create the full and original load torque. Turbocharging has been and will continue to be a key component to the new technologies that will make a positive difference in the next-generation engines of years to come. Concepts in Turbocharging for Improved Efficiency and Emissions Reduction explores the many ways that turbocharging will deliver concrete results in meeting the new realities of sustainable, green transportation.

The exhaust and after-treatment market is set for considerable growth. The tightening regulatory environment has led to considerably increased revenues per vehicle and this is set to improve globally as emerging high-growth markets catch up with Europe and Northern America in terms of the level of equipment needed to meet regulations. The costly situation where different national and regional regulation and testing regimes that have required different emissions technologies and systems is being steadily eroded by the harmonization of emissions regulations. Having initially endured the difficult situation of meeting environmental regulations developed across different markets, OEMs and suppliers have found that emerging markets have largely been able to pick their regulation ’off the shelf’. This has meant that those suppliers that have successfully developed technology to meet those regulations enjoy a competitive advantage in the emerging markets.

The increasing concern about CO2 emissions and energy prices has led to new CO2 emission and fuel economy legislation being introduced in world regions served by the automotive industry. In response, automotive manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers are developing a new generation of internal combustion (IC) engines with ultra-low emissions and high fuel efficiency. To further this development, a better understanding is needed of the combustion and pollutant formation processes in IC engines. As efficiency and emission abatement processes have reached points of diminishing returns, there is more of a need to make measurements inside the combustion chamber, where the combustion and pollutant formation processes take place. However, there is currently no good overview of how to make these measurements.

Onboard Diagnostics and Measurement in the Automotive, Shipbuilding and Aircraft Industries is a unique title which focuses on the direct (OBM) and indirect (OBD) determination of emissions in transportation. It offers the reader a state-of-the- art report on the recent developments concerning the determination of emissions and the estimation of pollutants concentrated in the exhaust pipe, using technologies such as intelligent micro controllers, micro sensors and micro actuators systems on board. Written by Dr. Palocz-Andresen, guest professor of Sustainable Transportation at Leuphana University in Lüneburg, this book is especially useful in understanding how the European Union and the United States address the problem of transport-generated emissions. This book goes beyond the more common emissions issues encountered in the automotive arena (including light duty and heavy commercial vehicles), to expand upon the upcoming and similar concerns derived from air and sea transport.

Exposure to noise at home, at work, while traveling, and during leisure activities is a fact of life for all Americans. As the population of the United States and, indeed, the world increases and developing countries become more industrialized, problems of noise are likely to become more pervasive and lower the quality of life for everyone. Efforts to manage noise exposures, to design quieter buildings, products, equipment, and transportation vehicles, and to provide a regulatory environment that facilitates adequate, cost-effective, sustainable noise controls require our immediate attention. This book, written for the engineering community; the public; government at the federal, state, and local levels; private industry; labor unions; and nonprofit organizations, looks at the most commonly identified sources of noise, how they are characterized, and efforts that have been made to reduce noise emissions and experiences.
