For the past nine years, South Africa-based Sasol has supplied a fuel mixture comprised of a coal-to-liquid (CTL) component blended with crude-oil-derived kerosene to international airlines operating from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
PSA Peugeot Citroën recently demonstrated the H2Origin research vehicle, based on a Peugeot Partner Origin cargo van. The project is a joint development in partnership with U.K.-based Intelligent Energy, which provided the fuel-cell system, with part-funding from the U.K.’s Technology Strategy Board. The H2Origin was designed to extend the range of an electric variant of the Partner Origin from 78 to 308 km (48 to 190 mi).
If only vehicles could run off the steam being created by the fevered reaction of consumers to high fuel prices. For now, though, the spotlight is on ethanol and other alternative fuel choices.
The European Commission in December said that soon it will propose a regulation on “the carbon content of fuels, notably through a greater use of biofuels.” The commission also expects to propose a rule on the efficiency of tires and other components (aside from the engine) that contribute to improved fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions.
Sikorsky selected Eaton to design, develop, and supply the integrated fuel system for its new military heavy-lift helicopter, the CH-53K. Eaton was also recently issued a contract for the hydraulic power generation system and fluid conveyance package.
At November’s Dubai Airshow, Qatar AirwaysQatar Petroleum, Qatar Fuel, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Shell, and the Qatar Science and Technology Park signed an agreement to research the feasibility and potential benefits of using gas-to-liquid synthetic jet fuels in aviation engines.
