Heavy-duty wheeled vehicles (HDWVs) are all-wheel-drive vehicles that carry 25 tons or more and have three or more axles. They transport heavy, bulky cargo such as raw minerals, timber, construction materials, pre-fabricated modules, weapons, combat vehicles, and more. HDWVs are used in a variety of industries (mining, logging, construction, energy) and are critical to a country’s economy and defense. These vehicles have unique development requirements due to their high loads, huge dimensions, and specific operating conditions. Hauling efficiencies can be improved by increasing vehicle load capacity; however capacities are influenced by legislation, road limits, and design. Designing HDWVs differs from other multi-purpose all-wheel-drive vehicles. The chassis must be custom-designed to suit the customer’s particular purpose. The number of axles is another variable, as well as which ones are driving and which are driven. Tires are also customizable. Translated by SAE from Russian, this book narrates the history of HDWVs and presents the theory and calculations required to design them.

The electric vehicle industry - land, water and air - is rapidly rising to become a huge market of over $290 billion by 2024. Some run entirely on harvested energy as with solar lake boats. Others recycle energy as with regenerative braking of cars, buses and military vehicles harvesting kinetic energy. Others use different forms of harvesting either to charge the traction batteries or to drive autonomous devices as we progress to the wireless vehicle. In some cases, harvesting is making completely new forms of electric vehicle possible such as "glider" Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) that stay at sea for years and surface to gain electricity from both wave power and sunshine whenever necessary. Indeed, multiple forms of energy harvesting on one vehicle is becoming much more common from cars to superyachts. This report is the first to provide technical and marketing analysis of the rapidly growing market for energy harvesting in electric vehicles - land, water and air - with forecasts.

Chassis technology today is one of the key functional areas responsible for overall performance in terms of vehicle dynamics, safety and fuel efficiency, and these functions can be seen as the key contributor to competitive advantage. At its simplest, the chassis can be defined as the frame of the vehicle plus its ‘running gear’ consisting of steering, suspension, wheels and brakes. However, today this description misses an essential point in that the chassis now is a complex set of components that are responsible for the vast majority of the ride, handling, comfort and safety. Furthermore, through the use of advanced materials and systems it has a significant role to play in reducing CO2 output.

Since the last tire report prepared in the first half of 2011, the world of tires has changed. From the strong recovery of 2010-2011 and following brief period of sustained growth, the market has entered another slow-down. The European tire market in particular has eased substantially and can be regarded as in a state of crisis for all the key segments with weak demand and reduced tire sales exacerbated by de-stocking, reduced demand and consumers switching from premium brands to lower-priced imports. Meanwhile the US has seen zero growth during 2012 while China, on the other hand, has seen its volumes increase and it is projecting further increase in 2013. China now dominates global tire manufacture, making more car and truck tires than any other country. Although much of that growth has been driven by exports, China’s domestic market remains the only major market to have shown sustained positive growth in the last five years. Trends in the Global Tire Industry is an in-depth study of the sector with detailed analysis of those internal and external drivers influencing the development of the industry.

A kinetic energy recover system (KERS) captures the kinetic energy that results when brakes are applied to a moving vehicle. The recovered energy can be stored in a flywheel or battery and used later, to help boost acceleration. KERS helps transfer what was formerly wasted energy into useful energy. In 2009, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) began allowing KERS to be used in Formula One (F1) competition. Still considered experimental, this technology is undergoing development in the racing world but has yet to become mainstream for production vehicles. The Introduction of this book details the theory behind the KERS concept. It describes how kinetic energy can be recovered, and the mechanical and electric systems for storing it. Flybrid systems are highlighted since they are the most popular KERS developed thus far. The KERS of two racing vehicles are profiled: the Dyson Lola LMP1 and Audi R18 e-tron Quattro. Four SAE technical papers follow the preface and focus on the use of KERS technology in F1 racing.

The market for light vehicle suspension systems has been changing rapidly over the past few years as technology has enabled levels of comfort and road holding to improve well beyond the boundaries of the compromise between comfort and safety that once effectively limited performance. Today, as part of an integrated chassis, advanced suspension systems are a key area through which one vehicle can be differentiated from another and on which OEMs look to build the essential 'DNA" of a vehicle. This report examines the key market drivers in this sector and details materials considerations, increasing electrification, challenges and barriers, chassis and suspension weight reduction and suspension performance. It also looks at kinematics & elastokinematics along with the move from active to passive suspension, including detailed sections on suspension element technology, and dampers & shock absorbers. The report also provides detailed profiles and analysis of 13 key suppliers active in this sector.

Today chassis, of which steering systems are one of the critical components, are responsible for the vast majority of the ride, handling, comfort and safety as an integrated and fundamentally important system. A simple functional description of the chassis today completely fails to adequately illustrate that in many ways it is the foundation for the vehicle’s driving dynamics, has an enormous effect on cost, weight and all aspects of the performance of the vehicle from CO2 output to safety. In this way there is a close connection between steering, as part of the chassis, its performance and the essential DNA of the vehicle. The way that systems are integrated today – the marrying of sensor technology, electronic and mechatronic systems with the more mechanical basic components – is therefore a key battleground for OEMs, and the management of the compromises in steering performance, safety systems, cost and weight is an increasingly important aspect of product or brand differentiation. About this report: This report begins by examining steering feel and the increasing effect of vehicle electrification and looks at steering and chassis performance.

Semi-active suspension systems promise weight efficiencies, cost savings, and higher safety and comfort compared to other types of electronically-controlled suspensions currently in use. With the growing emphasis on fuel economy, reduced CO2 emissions, and cost reductions for all vehicles, these semi-active systems are set to become a growing part of overall vehicle design, but coverage of them in standard automotive engineering texts is currently limited. This book provides a comprehensive overview of semi-active suspension systems with an emphasis on performance analysis and control design. Several different approaches using different control theories are presented and evaluated in the book, with methodology provided to analyze and evaluate suspension performances while identifying optimal performance bounds. Intended as an application-oriented reference for automotive engineers, a tutorial resource for students in automotive systems and a control design-oriented text for researchers, this book presents an authoritative account of this critical vehicle dynamics topic based on the extensive academic and industrial research of this expert author team.

Tire forensics is the methodical analysis of failed tires in order to identify the causes of a tire's disablement. By using the laws of physics, math, chemistry, and engineering - mixed with real-world tire background and experience - tire forensic experts determine the most likely events that led up to and caused a tire to fail. Tire Forensic Investigation: Analyzing Tire Failure covers the many ways that a tire can fail, and shows how to identify that failure. Based on the author's 30 years of experience in the tire industry, the book looks at the methodical, physical, visual and tactile examination of the failed tire and identifies the various failure modes for passenger car and light truck tires.
