Measuring Energy Consumption, Fuel Economy and Emissions of Conventional and Hybrid Medium/Heavy-Duty Vehicles using a Powertrain Dynamometer
This SAE Recommended Practice was established to provide an accurate, uniform and reproducible procedure for simulating use of MD/HD conventional vehicles and hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs), as well as plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) on powertrain dynamometers for the purpose of measuring emissions and fuel economy. This document does not specify which emissions constituents to measure (e.g., HC, CO, NOx, PM, CO2), as that decision will depend on the objectives of the tester. While the main focus of this procedure is for calculating fuel and energy consumption, it is anticipated that emissions may also be recorded during execution of this procedure. It should be noted that most MD/HD powertrains addressed in this document would be powered by engines that are certified separately for emissions. The engine certification procedure appears in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 40-§86 and §1065.
This document defines a physical layer having a higher bandwidth capacity than the classic physical layers defined for SAE J1939-14 by using flexible data rates. CAN controllers are now available which support the Flexible Data Rate Frame Format as defined in ISO 11898-1:2015. These controllers and compatible high speed transceivers are required for use on SAE J1939-17 networks. This SAE Recommended Practice is intended for light- and heavy-duty vehicles on- or off-road as well as appropriate stationary applications which use vehicle derived components (e.g., generator sets). Vehicles of interest include but are not limited to: on- and off-highway trucks and their trailers; construction equipment; and agricultural equipment and implements.
Dimensional Specifications for Non-Metallic Body Push-to-Connect Fittings Used On a Vehicular Air Brake System
This SAE Standard covers general dimensional specifications for non-metallic body reusable push to connect tube fittings for use in the piping of air brake systems on automotive vehicles. This type of fitting is intended for use with nylon tubing per SAE J844. It is not intended to restrict or preclude other designs of a tube fitting for use with SAE J844. Performance requirements for SAE J844 are covered in SAE J1131. This document is intended to supplement the J1939 documents by offering the J1939 information in a form that can be sorted and search for easier use. The J1939 Digital Annex, introduced in August 2013, offers key J1939 technical data in an Electronic Spreadsheet that can be easily searched, sorted, and adapted to other formats. J1939DA contains all of the SPNs (parameters), PGNs (messages), and other J1939 data previously published in the SAE J1939 top level document. J1939DA also contains all of the SLOTs, Manufacturer ID Codes, NAME Functions, and Preferred Addresses previously published in the SAE J1939 top level and the J1939-71 document. J1939DA contains the complete technical details for all of the SPNs and PGNs previously published in the SAE J1939-71 document. This SAE Recommended Practice is intended to describe a procedure for rating the size of single-stage reciprocating air compressors. It describes the conditions that can be used for testing and it defines a standardized rating expressed in SLPM (SCFM).
This Recommended Practice is derived from the FMVSS 105 vehicle test and applies to two-axle multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks and buses with a GVWR above 4 540 kg (10 000 lbs) equipped with hydraulic service brakes. There are two main test sequences: Development Test Sequence for generic test conditions when not all information is available or when an assessment of brake output at different inputs are required, and FMVSS Test Sequence when vehicle parameters for brake pressure as a function of brake pedal input force and vehicle-specific loading and brake distribution are available. The test sequences are derived from the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 105 (and 121 for optional sections) as single-ended inertia-dynamometer test procedures when using the appropriate brake hardware and test parameters.
This SAE recommended practice defines the system and component functions, measurement metrics, testing methodologies for evaluating the functionality and performance of ground vehicle CTIS. Systems of this type allow the driver to select the operational tire pressure set point (TPSP) based on off-highway conditions, and, upon returning to highway operations, maintain the inflation pressure to the vehicle specified level. These systems are recommended to address all serviceable tires as originally installed on a vehicle by the OEM and/or specialty vehicle manufacturer, and, for the aftermarket (including replacement or spare parts) are recommended (but optional) to address all tire/rim combinations installed after initial vehicle sale or in-use dates.

The scope of this Recommended Practice encompasses the range of environments which influence the performance and reliability of the electronic equipment designed for heavy duty on and off road vehicles, as well as any appropriate stationary applications which also use these vehicle derived components. A few examples of such vehicles are on and off highway trucks, trailers, buses, construction equipment, and agricultural equipment including implements.
This document will provide recommendations to vehicle manufacturers and component suppliers in securing the SAE J1939-13 connector interface from the cybersecurity risks posed by the existence of this connector.
This SAE Recommended Practice identifies the minimum truck tractor electrical power output of the stop lamp and ABS (antilock brake system) circuits measured at the primary SAE J560 tractor trailer interface connector(s).
This SAE Recommended Practice is intended to describe the application of single-phase DC to AC inverters, and bidirectional inverter/chargers, which supply power to ac loads in Class heavy duty on-highway trucks (10K GVW). The document identifies appropriate operating performance requirements and adds some insight into inverter selection. This document applies to factory and after-market installed DC-to-AC inverter systems (Including inverter chargers) providing up 3000 W of 120 VAC line-voltage power as a convenience for operator and passenger use. Such inverters are intended to power user loads not essential to vehicle Operation or safety (e.g., HVAC, TV, microwave ovens, battery chargers for mobile phones or laptop computers, audio equipment, etc.). Systems incorporate the inverter itself as well as the input, output, control, and signal wiring associated with the inverter.
Recommended Practice for Braking, Stability, and Control Performance Test Procedure for Air-Brake-Equipped Trucks and Buses
This Recommended Practice provides a road test procedure for trucks and buses, to evaluate their compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 121; Air Brake Systems. Units of measure are English in lieu of metric to be consistent with FMVSS 121.
This SAE standard establishes the minimum construction and performance requirements for seven conductor 1/8 2/10 4/12 cable for use on trucks, trailers and converter dollies. Where appropriate, the standard refers to two types of cables, (Type F and S, described later in the standard), due to the variation in the performance demands of cables used in flexing and stationary applications. While the document’s title refers to ABS Power to differentiate the document from the SAE J1067 standard that it supersedes, the scope applies to both the primary green cable for powering ABS and lighting and the yellow auxiliary cable of the same construction.

This SAE standard establishes the minimum construction and performance requirements for a combination cable consisting of 11 conductors and 4 twisted pairs for use on trucks, trailers, and dollies in conjunction with SAEJ2691. (15 pole connectors.) The cable includes both power and unjacketed SAE J1939-15 paired signal circuits along with dual ground wires to accommodate grounding requirements within the constraints of the SAE J2691 terminal capacity.
Dimensional Compatibility for Commercial Vehicles Fitment of Complete Wheels in Drum Brake Applications - Truck and Bus
This SAE Recommended Practice defines a clearance line for establishing dimensional compatibility between drum brakes and wheels with 19.5 inch, 22.5 inch, and 24.5 inch diameter rims. Wheels designed for use with drum brakes may not be suitable for disc brake applications. The lines provided establish the maximum envelope for brakes, including all clearances, and minimum envelope for complete wheels to allow for interchangeability. This document addresses the dimensional characteristics only, and makes no reference to the performance, operational dynamic deflections, or heat dissipation of the system. Valve clearances have not been included in the fitment lines. Bent valves may be required to clear brake drums. Disc brake applications may require additional running clearances beyond those provided by the minimum contour lines. Mounting systems as noted are referenced in SAE J694.
This SAE Standard establishes the minimum performance and endurance requirements for coiled electrical cables used for hookup between trucks, trailers and dollies. The component standards SAE J2394 (replaced SAE J1067) for cable and SAE J560 for connectors must be consulted to determine the complete performance and endurance requirements of the system. Related TMC Recommended Practices may be consulted for information associated with selection, installation and inspection of these coiled electrical cables. This document is intended to set out requirements for the majority of conditions rather than for specialized applications or environments.
Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor for Use with Electronic Controls in Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Applications - Truck and Bus
The purpose of this SAE Recommended Practice is to provide a common electrical and mechanical interface specification that can be used to design electronic accelerator pedal position sensors and electronic control systems for use in medium- and heavy-duty vehicle applications.
This SAE Recommended Practice takes into account modern standardized methods for collecting and summarizing data that has an effect on vehicle steady-state performance, such as engine output (gross and net), transmission losses, drivetrain efficiency, vehicle aerodynamic devices for various vehicle and body configurations, as well as road surface variations and air density variations resulting from altitude and barometric effects. The procedure does not address vehicle transient performance (acceleration, braking, and cornering), because of the considerable amount of additional data required such as moment of inertia of all the rotating parts. Nor does it address vehicles with torque converters and automatic transmissions. This document is, therefore, intended for vehicles having fixed-ratio type transmissions and positive engagement clutches. Metric and ISO unit conversions are provided in the metric conversion tables at the end of this procedure (see Appendix B).
