This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) provides the user with standardized guidelines for the measurement of effective intensity of strobe anticollision lights for aircraft in the laboratory, in maintenance facilities, and in the field. A common source of traceability for calibration of the measurement systems, compensation for known causes of variation in light output, and recommendations which minimize sources of errors and uncertainties are included in this document. Estimates of uncertainty and error sources for each class of measurement are discussed.

The information in this SAE Information Report is the result of studies by the Automobile Manufacturers Association, American Trucking Association, and Truck Trailer Manufacturers Association, to achieve interchangeability of equipment which will comply with the legal dimensional limitations for the majority of states and yet permit increased loading space within these dimensions. This in no way supersedes other information in the SAE Handbook on this subject. Some cases will require more care in application allowing splash shield clearance at trailer support interference points and positioning fifth wheel to allow trailer swing clearance on an 11% grade. All dimensions are given in inches. Table 1 and Figures 1 and 2 show basic requirements for interchangeability of truck tractor and semitrailer equipment. Figure 3 shows the interchangeability of the doubles converter dolly.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) provides best practices and guidance for creating an architecture for integrated vehicle health management systems. Where possible, this document will also provide references to tools to conduct architectural trades. Finally, this document will provide use cases to expose considerations and stakeholders to be included in these trades and utilization of an IVHM system (which may lead to new functional or non-functional requirements).

1.1 This recommended practice describes two methods for determining the tendency of interior materials used in automobiles and other vehicles to (a) produce a light scattering deposit (fog) on a glass surface, or (b) produce a measurable deposit (mass) on aluminum foil. 1.2 This document is applicable to the measurement of a fog condensate on glass or aluminum foil surfaces within the limits of the test conditions. 1.3 It is the responsibility of the user of this document to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to its use.

The scope of the test method is to provide stakeholders including fluid manufacturers, brake manufacturers, aircraft constructors, aircraft operators and airworthiness authorities with a relative assessment of the effect of deicing chemicals on carbon oxidation. This test is designed to assess the relative effects of runway deicing chemicals by measuring mass change of contaminated and bare carbon samples tested under the same conditions.

This SAE Recommended Practice establishes for left-hand steer on-road trucks, buses, and multipurpose passenger vehicles with GVW of 4500 kg (10 000 lb) or greater: a. Minimum performance requirements for windshield wiping systems. b. Uniform test procedures that include those tests that can be conducted on uniform test equipment by commercially available laboratory facilities. c. Uniform terminology of windshield wiper system characteristics and phenomena consistent with those found in guides for the use of engineering layout studies to evaluate system performance. d. Guides for the design and location of components of the systems for function, servicing of the system, etc. The test procedures and minimum performance requirements, outlined in this document, are based on currently available engineering data. It is the intent that all portions of the document will be periodically reviewed and revised as additional data regarding windshield wiping system performance are developed.

This SAE Recommended Practice establishes uniform test procedures and performance requirements for the defrosting system of enclosed cab trucks, buses, and multipurpose vehicles. It is limited to a test that can be conducted on uniform test equipment in commercially available laboratory facilities. Current engineering practice prescribes that for laboratory evaluation of defroster systems, an ice coating of known thickness be applied to the windshield and left- and right-hand side windows to provide more uniform and repeatable test results, even though under actual conditions such a coating would necessarily be scraped off before driving. The test condition, therefore, represents a more severe condition than the actual condition, where the defroster system must merely be capable of maintaining a cleared viewing area.

The focus of this SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) is the integration of thermally actuated pressure release devices, hereafter referred to as fuse plugs, with the wheel and brake assembly. It does not address the manufacturing, quality or acceptance test requirements pertaining to the production of these fuse plugs. It establishes minimum design, installation, qualification, and operational requirements for fuse plugs which are used only in tubeless tire type aircraft braked wheels. Fuse plugs are designed to completely release the contained inflation pressure from a tubeless tire and wheel assembly when brake generated heat causes the tire or wheel to exceed a safe temperature level. The objective is to prevent tire or wheel rupture due to brake generated heat that could cause an unsafe condition for personnel or the aircraft. This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) establishes methods for testing airframe plain bearings. The purpose of ARP5448 and its associated slash sheets is to document test methods commonly used to evaluate airframe bearings. These test methods may be referenced in specifications, part standards, purchase orders, etc., when the test is deemed appropriate to the intended use of the bearing by the end user of the bearing. These test methods are not intended to encompass every conceivable requirement for an airframe bearing. The end user of the bearing must exercise engineering judgment to determine the most appropriate standard and/or nonstandard tests for the application.
