This Technical Paper Collections deals with every aspect of flight in what is now known as Appendix D icing conditions, flight in clouds with ice crystal content. The collection includes papers that present planning for future ice crystal research, the development of ice crystal test facilities, and wind tunnel and flight tests to gather ice crystal data and data on the effects of ice crystals. Since ice crystals generally affect only turbine engines, this collection will have a strong emphasis on engine icing.

Particular emphasis is on methods for physical modeling, for increased geometric complexity, for process integration, and in the validation of the methodology.

This Technical Paper Collection addresses a wide variety of research topics related to aircraft ground deicing operations including active frost detection systems, liquid water equivalent based systems to determine and update anti-icing fluid holdover times. Aircraft flight testing and wind tunnel testing with anti-icing fluids, along with fluid failure modeling, runway deicing fluid development and environmental regulations are also covered.
